What Operating Systems Will Enabler Work With?

Home > Support > FAQ > What Operating Systems will Enabler Work With?

The Enabler system is divided into two installation components, server and client.

The server component must be run on the PC with the Enabler card installed.

The client component (typically a POS terminal or similar) can be run:

These different parts of The Enabler depend on different parts of the Windows Operating System, so each component has different Operating System requirements.

Enabler V3.30 onwards

There is a single installer, with the option to install either server (including client components), or just the client components.

Earlier versions of Enabler (prior to V3.30)

There are separate installations for server (which includes the client) or for client only.

Notes

  1. Due to changes in Windows XP, the default beep is disabled. There is a registry setting to control this - refer to our FAQ Why Don't Enabler Sounds Work on Windows XP for more information.
  2. The Enabler has been tested to ensure compatibility with WinXP SP2, but we suggest you read our FAQ on configuring client access on Windows XP.
  3. We have observed issues running with MSDE 1.0 on Windows XP or later. Install an MSDE service pack to resolve this. Current Enabler installs include MSDE2000 or SQL2005 Express so are not affected by this issue.
  4. Enabler Release 3.51 will install SQL2005 Express Edition by default. SQL2005 is the recommended database server for Windows Vista. It is still possible to use MSDE or SQL Server 2000 with Enabler 3.51 though.
  5. Prior to installing Enabler, it is recommended that your hard drive is formatted using the NTFS file system (or better) instead of FAT16/FAT32. NTFS offers access control and better fault tolerance against file corruption compared to FAT16/FAT32. Refer to Microsoft's website for more information about available file systems for your selected Operating System.
